The Electric Mini Cooper SE Is About More Than Just a Range

If you can live with a 110-mile range, the first Mini right EV, the 2020 Cooper SE, is a fun-to-drive bargain.

Most people don't need 200 miles of reach. That is the crucial premise of the 2020 Mini Cooper SE, which offers only 110 miles of EPA-Rated range from 32.6-kWh batteries.

Assuming your daily commute and charger access should be with that range, there are a few benefits of a small package approach: lower weight, more cargo space, and, most importantly, a lower price.

The Cooper $30.750 entry point makes it cheaper than even the Hyundai Ioniq Electric, a car which is a less pleasant way to drive and hardly go further at a cost. Suddenly, the Mini has a budget-EV niche performance.

After $7500 federal tax credits, the Cooper SE costs $23.250, and it is an excellent price for something that will do zero to 60 mph at 6.9 seconds, regardless of how it is powered.

Highs: low price, excellent handling, enough power from BMW i3s.

Of course, there is sometimes additional credit status. Colorado knocked another $4000, carrying a low US price of $19.250. (Don't worry. They make incomes with the recreational cannabis sales tax.) Taking the page of the financial guidelines of Tesla-justification, Mini also figures that over the past six years, SE will save an average of $4446 US drivers in the cost of fuel. All of you fire devotees can hate on the financial losses of the new cars all you want, but Cooper SE makes a strong case for skinflints.

Electric Boogaloo

Mini SE also happens to be a rather exciting car. Judging the motors from the BMW i3s, the Mini put 181 horsepower and 199 lb-ft torque through the front wheels.

It doesn't feel quite as fast as the Chevrolet Bolt, Nissan Leaf Plus, or KIA Niro EV, but it's close. At the next dinner party, go ahead and Regale your friend with the fact that SE Cooper is not zero to 37 mph in 3.9 seconds.

This is strong from the line, although there seems to be some electronic torque cutting effect until you scroll. Even when you turn off the traction control, it refuses to fry the tires from the line. Yes, we tried.

Steer The Cooper SE to On-Ramp, and depend on ferociously. It wouldn't be surprising if, in terms of sheer clutches, this is the most capable Mini.

A small, 12-module battery meant that the heavily cited stay in a reasonably slim 3153 pound and a T-shape Pack mounting position (between the front seat and under the rear seat) worked wonders for both centers of gravity and weight balance.

The Mini also offers a US 58/42-percent front-to-back weight distribution much better than the Cooper S, which carries 63 percent of its weight in advance.

And, although driving 0.7 inches higher than Cooper S-to permit the Battery-Mini claimed as the center of gravity is 1.2 inches lower.

Also, unlike most EVS, Cooper SE was faced with delightful rubber: Goodyear Eagle F1s, Ultra-High Performance throughout the Ban season.

LOWS: Short-distance, no adaptive cruise, rules of traction control with an iron fist.

There are some clues outside that Cooper SE is electrical. Certain Trim pieces are highlighted in Energetic Yellow, a color from the Mucinex palette that can be removed.

The icon Trim has three asymmetric holes of different wheels and, we assume, aerodynamic. And there are some letters from the badge plugs in the grid, sides, and hatching. But mostly, the Cooper SE looks like all the other Coopers on the way. It even has a Hood spoon.

Inside, Toggle stop-Start is emblazed with greenish-yellow and flanked by a lever for brake regeneration (you can opt for one-pedal driving or a more traditional beach-down setting similar to its internal combustion vehicle) and sports driving mode.

A matte-finished oval display on top of the steering wheel shows speed, state replenishment, range, and power or the use of healing at any given moment.

Create a case

While the road trip is not from SE Forte, it comes with the standard SAE 50-kW DC Quick charging combo that can bring it to an 80 percent charge in 40 minutes.

And, in welcoming recognition that not every household has a Charger, Mini including TurboCord that can work with either 120-or 240-volt outlets.

Plugged into the last one, you can Top off the full charge in eight hours. A Level 2 charger will take action in four hours. You can also pre-heat (or cool) the car when plugged in, via the phone app.

Sometimes a low base price only applies to a stripped-down model that is actually not purchased. Still, the Cap Signature level-entry Cooper SE covers almost everything you want: LED lights, heated seats, navigation, Apple CarPlay, mirrors Heated and jet washing machines, black imitation leather seats, Auto-based emergency braking cameras, and 16-inch wheels.

Signature Plus ($34,750) adds a 17-inch wheel, a power-folding mirror, a rear garden distance control, a beautiful moon roof, and an improved Harman-Kardon sound system.

The Iconic Trim ($37,750) brings a head-up look, a more massive touchscreen centre, and wireless charging (for your phone, not a car), along with some trivial frippery like a steering wheel that differs from the standard leather steering wheel.

The only known general option there is across the board is the adaptive Cruise Control. You know, Leaf offers adaptive cruise control.

Not that we imagine too many people considering that Cooper SE will cross the shopping leaves (or bolts, Kona, or Niro). Mini Cooper SE is a different type of electric car, one based on the assumption that you do not have to drive 200 miles with a fee.

Thus, the compromise that we have come to expect in the name of Extended Range-Slave-to-Aero styling, rock-hard tires, massive pig sidewalks, higher prices-which are nixed from scratch, rendering the rest of the car better in every way. If you don't have too far to go, this may be the best electric way to get you there.
