Honda Insight (2009-2014) Used car reviews

Honda is a company that likes to impress with engineering. It is often successful as well. Many remember the original Insight of the 1999 and a small, mighty duel with the Toyota Prius for supremacy in the still-beginner hybrid market.

Prius goes on to sell millions and Honda is a bit strange to be a little collector car. Then Honda did something very un-Honda. They are followed rather than led, and second-generation Insight can also be a Prius in Honda clothing. A pretty good sale this time but does the second generation of Insight make in-depth purchases used? We run the top Honda Hybrid rules here.

Model

5dr Hatch (1.3 Gasoline/Electric Hybrid [ES, ES-T, SE, EX])

History

Second-generation Insight was first sold in Japan. It came to England in March 2009 and immediately began to outsell the incumbent champion, the Toyota Prius, mainly because it was much cheaper. The version we've explicitly seen here is the 2010-and-on Model. It is more suited to the British road because it has a custom suspension track for the job; the first car does not ride very well at all.

New, Top-of-the-range EX models, featuring black leather upholstery and DVD Sat NAV and hands-free telephones, were also added in 2010. As well as upgrades for the suspension, Honda then also added a rear parking sensor to the ES Insights model and above, and updated trim to improve the interior. The dashboard and colour of the seats are also altered to provide a more uniform finish, and some plastic has been developed. The Chrome ring now surrounds the air vents in the cab, and the doors are adorned with silver finishes.

The next Set of updates appeared on the tail end of 2011, with the CO2 emissions shaved to 96g/km, this was achieved through enhanced aerodynamics and powertrain efficiency. Decreasing engine friction, changes in the CVT transmission and AC upgrades all contribute to lower fuel consumption. The Insight also got an exterior refresh design, including a new front grille. At the back, visibility increased through the introduction of a sleek and modified tailgate decoration, plus a reduction in the size of a motor wiper. Adjustments are also made to machines and suspensions for other repairs to improve comfort and stability, while interior quality is improved. During 2014, all Honda's Hybrid models were removed slowly from previous sales of the next generation of gasoline/electric models.

What you get

This MK2 five-door Insight is a massively less challenging vehicle to see than the original Ekdball Coupe, but Toyota may be less fascinated by its shape than we all are due to resemblance it bears to the Prius. Honda was stuck with a hatchback design to ensure the car's compatibility with European tastes and although a little bit around the hindquarters, it was a sleek and somewhat futuristic shape.

The refreshed design that was visited in the car after the launch provided a smart front Grille which was more akin to the 9th generation Civic, the Honda hatchback more conventional family that offers. Go for one of the updated variants, and you will find that on the back, there is a sleek spoiler and a smaller rear wiper motor. Whichever version you go, you will find once inside that the dash has chunky buttons and a little mess feels Accord, despite the initial concerns that you will need a few hours with the owner's manual before you can change the radio station should quickly subside as the controls prove to be intuitive to use.

Five-door body styles Insight opens the possibility of using it as family transport. The head of the chamber in the back seat is limited by aerodynamic rooflines but rather abundant space. Despite the presence of batteries, the generous boot of 408 litres and rear seats can fold to increase capacity. Compared to conventional family hatchback models, cars can hold their own.

This all the excellent hybrid power to the front of the training pipeline for high-end cars that sells to a small number of wealthy customers but has a significant impact on global vehicle emissions problems, clean vehicles should be much more prevalent. That means being more affordable, and it's a Honda thought with Insight. Designed for slots on the market under the existing brand and Civic IMA of the Toyota Prius arch-rival, Insight when the new is always priced at an equivalent level for the conventional family hatchbacks.

What to look for

Honda Insight has a record of almost unparalleled reliability. What Car? And the magazine provided it was the top place in its class in their reliability survey and the tough owner of its highly resistant nature to bombs. There is very little to go wrong in the transmission, and the electricity continues very well. That means you can generally buy with confidence. Insight is not tire or other consumables, so look out for the sidewalk rash on the alloy wheels and supermarket car parking in bodywork. Do not delay a higher long-distance car either. Only about the only thing that does not give after a serious mileage is the driver's seat pillow.

Replacement parts

(approx based on Insight 2013) A headlamp for your Insight will set back around £160 while the AC compressor is £300. A Starter Motor is £120 while a set of front brake pads will get you back £50 a pair.

On the way

With just 87bhp, a CVT automatic gearbox and a relaxing 0-60mph Sprint 12.5, owners can try to push as fast as they like, but their efforts tend to be foiled. Finally, the drivers must get aggression out of their system and settle into Insight into how to do things. Instrument Center recited is the key to all this. Drive in a relaxed way, tickle the underground throttle like it is an over-ripe strawberry giant, and the dash shines in calming green light. Get a little above the enthusiasm and fade the green hue, finally turn blue if you are very well taken away. At this point, you can imagine a family of polar bears falling through a hole that was just made on an ice cap. Maintain a green approach and small crop symbols illuminate Insight insights as gifts. It's possible to get up to five of this sprouts lit up, but you may need to adjust the sailing to accomplish this. At the end of your trip, the car will give you a low value to show how friendly your environment is. The Model does not rely entirely on soothing drivers into sustainable battles of one-upmanship environment against themselves. It also has a smart Honda IMA gasoline/electric longer drivetrain again to fall back. The engine is a 1.3-litre unit based on one in Civic Hybrid and features a neat set of innovations. During the slowdown, the cylinder was closed by the VCM (Variable Cylinder Management) system to improve efficiency and many modifications have been made to reduce friction inside the engine. Gasoline units may only have 87bhp but are assisted by a 14bhp electric motor driven by the power of the Bank nickel hydride battery under the Floor boot. It is replenished by the energy of the wheel reclamation when braking or sliding.

Overall

The Honda Insight never did quite as well as it initially promised. Despite a perky start, it soon became apparent that there was any number of turbodiesel hatchbacks that could improve on the 61mpg fuel economy figure of the Honda and deliver better performance and a sharper steer while they were at it. That doesn't mean that you should dismiss it out of hand as a used proposition. Quite the opposite.

The Insight is one of those cars that, if anything, makes more sense when used. It's more reliable than a typical turbodiesel; servicing costs are low and residual values have fallen off a bit of a cliff which makes it a real bargain. If you want a reliable and presentable hatch for city use and like the look of a hybrid, the Insight makes all kinds of sense.
