This is more than automatic, but what is meant by Porsche PDK Gearbox, and how does it work?If you are considering buying a new or used Porsche, or if you are just a fan of brands, you may have seen PDK letters appear in precise car specifications and wondered what it stands for.
Put, PDK means a dual-clutch automatic gearbox; The name derives from the German language ' Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe, ' which translates as Porsche's dual-clutch gearbox.
The PDK system largely replaces the conventional Tiptronic gearbox throughout the Porsche range since it was first introduced in 2007. However, the current and previous Cayenne models still use traditional automatic gearboxes.
The basic principle of PDK is the same as most dual-clutch gearboxes in that they have two clutches and, in essence, two gearboxes are combined into one casing. One clutch operates on the first, third, fifth, seventh, and backward gear, with the second coupling managing the second, fourth, and sixth gears.
Porsche originally technology Mats in the 1960 's and installed to the 962 dominant group C car race, but it took two decades of other development before it was deemed suitable for use in automobile production roads.
What this means is that, unlike the manual gearbox, when one gear next affliction is involved so rapidly that the disorder in power is almost invisible, with a shift times below 100 milliseconds. Fast and near-seamless displacement speeds enhance comfort as well as performance, with ultra-smooth shifts when the gearbox is left in a fully automatic mode.
In contrast, the entire PDK model is equipped with a paddle shifter or button that allows the driver to control their movements, and here the displacement speed means a sharp response to the driver's input.
Further bonuses from PDK are efficient. Although the more complex gearbox weighs about 30kg more than the equivalent manual, the overall efficiency of the transmission is improved. For example, the Cayman 718 manual claimed the maximum WSS consumption combined 32.8 mpg, compared with 33.2 MPG for a PDK-equipped model.
